Six-time winner Taylor began his final campaign at the Civic Hall with a 5-1 defeat of Australia's BDO World Trophy Champion Peter Machin, while 2012 Champion "Barney" overcame the BDO's local hero Jamie Hughes by the same scoreline.
There was also a 5-1 victory for debutant Rob Cross, who saw-off fellow Target pro Joe Murnan - the only Target player to lose on the opening day.
The afternoon session had seen tight victories for Target duo Stephen Bunting and Alan Norris, but both had to survive match darts to claim the two points available.
"The Bullet" saw young Dutchman Jeffrey de Zwaan miss three for the match in a deciding leg in Group F, while Norris held a 4-1 lead over Australia's Corey Cadby, but still had to rely on his opponent missing double-top in the last leg decider.
Former finalist Dave Chisnall also went top of his group, defying an average of 100 from Scott Mitchell to record a 5-2 victory.
The action continues on Sunday, with all players involved playing their second group stage games - including another all-Target clash between Dave Chisnall and Stephen Bunting, and Rob Cross once again testing himself against world number one Michael van Gerwen.
All matches will be shown live on Sky Sports in the UK, and worldwide via the PDC's broadcast partners.
