No darts player has ever won the event with Phil Taylor coming the closest in 2010. ‘The Power’ finished runner-up to jockey AP McCoy and since then no other dart player has come close.

Can Luke Littler Win Sports Personality of the Year?

With the meteoric rise of darts globally, Luke Littler has emerged as the sport’s brightest star and a serious contender for the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) award as well as Young sports personality of the year award.

At just 17 years old, Littler has taken the darts world by storm, delivering blockbuster performances and smashing records in his debut season.

This year alone, Littler has:

  •     Thrown an incredible four 9-darters.
  •     Secured 10 PDC titles, becoming only the third player in history to achieve this feat in a year.
  •     Climbed to fourth place in the world rankings.

But it doesn’t stop there. Littler also claimed the Premier League title, won the Grand Slam, and cemented himself as one of the sport’s most exciting talents—all in his first season.

Littler’s dominance has elevated his profile and helped propel darts further into the mainstream, showcasing its appeal as a competitive and entertaining sport. With this incredible momentum, his SPOTY credentials are undeniable.

Sports Personality of the Year: Favourites to win.

Keely Hodgkinson

Middle-distant Olympic runner Keely Hodgkinson is the current favourite for Sports Personality of the Year. The 22-year-old broke onto the scene at 19 when she won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She was pinned to claim gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics and delivered with an assured 800m win.

Many bookmakers have her as the favourite to pick up the trophy in Salford and it seems she will be Luke Littler’s main competitor on the night.

Luke Littler

Luke Littler has led the rise of darts. The 17-year-old has been one of the highest-searched names in the UK. After his 2024 World Championship Finals loss, he has not looked back in the debut season, wowing fans across the globe.

Littler has hit four 9-darters earning over £1 million in prize money and interacting with a new generation of darts.

Littler has been made second favourite by many bookies but can this 17-year-old pick up one more trophy before the World Darts Championship?

Mark Cavendish

Mark Cavendish is third on the bookies’ list. The 39-year-old cycling star is retiring at the end of this year. Cavendish won this event in 2011 and would be one of only five people to win it twice.

Cavendish broke the Tour de France stage wins, recording 35 victories in July and has been Knighted this year.

He has been placed with higher odds than Hodgkinson and Littler. It would be a surprise to see Cavendish win.

Sarah Storey

47-year-old Paralympian Sarah Storey claimed her 19th gold medal in Paris, also her 9th Paralympic Games. Sarah Storey originally started as a swimmer for Great Britain but has since swapped the pool for the road and claimed two gold medals in cycling in Paris.

Everyone is wondering whether the cyclist will compete in the Los Angeles Paralympics, but whether that happens or not, winning the Sports Personality of the Year award would be a fitting way to end her career.

Alex Yee

Next, we have another Olympian triathlete, Alex Yee. Yee had an amazing 2024 winning the World and Olympic championships in standard and 'Olympic' distance triathlon, the second man to win both titles in a single year.

Yee may be further in the betting, but after his magnificent year, the Lewisham-native could win Sports Personality of the Year.

Jude Bellingham

Last on the list, England and Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham. Bellingham had a standout year for Los Blanco’s last year with the Stourbridge-born scoring 19 goals in La Liga and guiding Real Madrid to another Champions League win.

Bellingham also helped guide England to another Euro final in Germany but even his assist in the final wasn’t enough to get England over the line.

Bellingham did pick up La Liga Player of the Season last year and was in contention for the Ballon d’Or, so he has a good shout of getting the Sports Personality of the Year.

When is Luke Littler Next Playing?

The next time we see Luke Littler will be at the biggest darts tournament of the year The World Darts Championship.
