World Cup of Darts 2024: Why is Luke Littler not playing?

Founded in 2010, the World Cup of Darts is an annual international tournament where the best players come together to compete in a unique format to earn glory for themselves and the country they represent.
Considering the tournament features the best players from each country and the recent success and attention on Luke Littler, new fans to the sport may be wondering why Luke is not representing England in this year’s addition of the tournament.
Why is Luke Littler not playing at the World Cup of Darts 2024?
While Littler has had a phenomenal year since turning professional, he will not be eligible to play for England at the World Cup of Darts. This is due to how the players for each country are selected. Each year, the two highest ranked players from each country - ususally based on the PDC Order of Merit - are selected. For unseeded countries however, they may use a different system to select their players when neccessary.
‘The Nuke’ is currently ranked 25th in the Order of Merit, whereas Luke Humphries and Michael Smith are ranked first and third respectively due to their performance over 2 previous years.
That means Humphries and Smith are in line to represent England. Despite the absence of Luke Littler the presence of both the world number 1 and 3 lining up for England bodes well for the country’s chances of success.Â
