The date was set, and Alexandra Palace was calling a new World Champion. Could the outstanding 16-year-old who has taken darts into a new stratosphere win the big prize or could the man who has won three major events in 2023 finally win the big one?
Here is a detailed breakdown of how the final took place.
Littler won the first leg in set one with a 16-dart hold but after this, it was Humphries who took over the set. The Berkshire-born reeled off three consecutive legs in 13, 17 and 14 darts to open his account with a set average of 99.
In set two Littler levelled in sensational style he did lose the first two legs, but the teenager responded superbly. After surviving a set dart from Humphries in leg three littler followed up 13-darter with consecutive 142 and 120 checkouts.
The two traded the next two sets and it was all even at 2-2. Littler started to stamp his authority in sets five and six. Littler won set five 3-1 with 13, 12 and 11 darters and in set six won it 3-0 and increased his winning run to nine of the last 11 legs.
The 16-year-old was now leading 4-2 against Luke Humphries as the game entered the seventh set.
Humphries ultimately halted the Littler rampage in a game-changing seventh set. Humphries began the set with a magnificent 170 checkout, although Littler responded with a brace of 12 darters to keep the set alive 2-1 in legs but the World Number One powered through the rest of the set to cut the game to 3-4 in Littler’s favour.
