Cross displays another excellent performance in week five of the tournament in Aberdeen.
Only leg difference keeps Target's Rob Cross off the top of the Premier League table, after another excellent performance in week five of the tournament in Aberdeen.
"Voltage" produced his 11th career victory (and his second in five days) against World Championship finalist Michael Smith, winning 7-3 at the BHGE Arena.
After the opening four legs were shared, a magical 164 checkout on the bullseye kick-started a surge in the middle of the game from which Smith could not recover.
Cross closed out his third victory of the campaign by a scoreline of 7-3, averaging 103.96 and hitting almost 55% of his doubles in the process.
"I'm really happy," said Cross, who also defeated Smith in Sunday's UK Open semi-finals. "There's a lot more to come but I did a good job today.
"I took my chances well - the 164 settled me down and was a catalyst for me.
"Michael's a fantastic player and I thought it would be a lot closer, but I'm getting back to my best darts and I'm enjoying it again."
The result leaves him joint level on points with league leader James Wade, with an all-Target clash to come next week in Nottingham against Raymond van Barneveld.
The five-time World Champion is still searching for his first win of the season, after going down 7-3 to Peter Wright.
Week six in the East Midlands will also see Target's recently-crowned UK Open Champion Nathan Aspinall compete as one of The Contenders, as "The Asp" takes on Michael Smith in the opening game of the night.
